Life Skills Training & Education
Recovering from an addiction can be a daunting task, with detox and withdrawal only being the beginning of the process. Once detox is successfully completed, a person is faced with living a sober lifestyle that may be completely unfamiliar to them.
At Promont Wellness, we believe in accessible, individualized addiction treatment therapies that can help clients from detox to long-term health and well-being. We offer comprehensive treatments and addiction therapies, including a life skills program that can support clients as they transition back into their new, healthier way of life. You can contact us today at 866.939.4243 if you’d like to learn more about how we can help ease the transition into day-to-day life.
What exactly is a life skills program?
A life skills program aims to teach clients the basic life skills that they need in order to lead a healthy and successful life. These skills help ensure lifelong recovery and improved mental and physical health. The core life skills are as follows:
- Self-awareness – Knowing one’s strengths, weaknesses, desires, likes, and dislikes.
- Coping with emotions – Identifying one’s emotions and how those emotions influence their behaviors. Responding appropriately to these emotions.
- Coping with stress – Acknowledging how one’s stress can affect life. Recognizing sources of stress and how to control one’s own stress levels.
- Critical thinking – The ability to process experiences and analyze information.
- Creative thinking – The ability to imagine the consequences of action or inaction given a situation. Being able to hypothetically explore all available alternatives.
- Decision-making – The ability to deal with life decisions.
- Problem-solving – The ability to deal with issues as they come through life.
- Communication – Knowing the culturally and socially appropriate verbal and non-verbal ways of expression.
- Interpersonal relationships – Knowing how to relate positively to others.
- Empathy – The ability to imagine a different perspective, regardless of familiarity with the situation.
A life skills program is a key component of the recovery process and can help ensure lasting success and long-term sobriety.
Is Life Skills Important When Treating Addiction?
The short answer is yes. Typically, when a person is in the throes of an addiction, they find themselves completely absorbed with the substance that they are using. Once detox is over, and they are trying to resume their everyday life, it is often disorienting to lose what used to be a large part of their daily habits. This makes it seem easier to fall back into old routines that can result in a return to using. In life skills programs that are integrated with addiction treatment, clients in recovery will be taught how to navigate their new sober lifestyles.

At Promont Wellness, we believe in patient-focused care that is tailored to give each client the best chance at success. As such, our life skills program may contain any of the following that would be deemed beneficial to the patient’s long-term sobriety:
- Self-Care: Patients are taught to hold themselves accountable for making healthier decisions when it comes to their physical and mental well-being.
- Time Management & Routines: Since being lonely or bored may be triggers for abuse, learning to maintain a full schedule with a healthy routine can give a recovering patient’s days structure in order for them to better adjust to their new lifestyle.
- Stress Management: Patients who have suffered through addiction are taught how to manage and address stress and negative emotions in order to prevent them from becoming triggers for substance abuse.
- Social Skills: It is common for a patient’s pre-detox social circles to involve, or even revolve around, substance abuse. In treatment, a new, sober social network can be created with the help of meetings and support groups.
- Managing Finances: A substance abuse disorder can wreak havoc on someone’s finances. Patients are helped by finding and keeping the right job, as well as budgeting and saving.
- Goal Setting: It is important for a patient in recovery to set and work on goals as it keeps them moving forward. Goals give a sense of purpose, self-worth, and achievement.
An effective life skills program could turn your life around. It’s a helpful resource in the addiction recovery process and can help to improve confidence and mental health as well.
How to Get Help
What clients say about us...
“I’d like to thank Courtney from the bottom of my heart. She helped me through the scary process of getting into treatment and then treated me with respect and compassion. The treatment process was scary, vulnerable and uncomfortable, but she did everything she could to make me feel as comfortable as possible. I have become an active member of the recovery community and could not have done it without the guidance and expertise Courtney provided throughout treatment.”
